My business, "West Boca Karate", established in 1986, in the Shoppes of Loggers Run, keeps me busy. With over 500 Black Belts and thousands of loyal and happy customers, (over our 26 years span) I am now able do things in our community like helping to get Alan West elected was very important to me. I would like to say, Linda, my wife, and I both enjoy listening to you each morning. I heard you and Jim speaking about Iran and would like to weigh in. Sanctions against Iran are nothing more than a tool they will use against us at a later date. They also have a tendency to hurt the people of the country and make them mad. Change can only take place in this country in two ways, as I see it. 1. Change needs to come from within. The people of Iran have to say they have had enough. Methods like social media can work, however will take longer and can be interfered with by the government of Iran. 2. More effective and I feel will be much faster, would be to get to the Iranian citizens that exist behind the scenes/shadows, the ones that have the ears and power that control the Iranian government. I would venture to say that the CIA knows exactly who these people are and where they live. More than likely, many of them live in the USA and some countries we are friendly with. Force these people to move back to their country, Iran, and uproot their entire lives. Brian, the opposite of Love is not hate, it's indifference. When you dismiss a persons existence or a countries existence, for that matter, that is effective pain. Change will come much quicker when the right people can feel the loss.

Thank you again

Ron

Job Creation

Whenever it falls upon a president or a committee to find ways of creating jobs for a nation in abnormal times of serious national unemployment these steps should be followed:

1. Seek projects that will employ a diverse number of highly technically skilled trades as well as an unskilled work force. (College kids and locals)

2. Look for investors from the private sector to take part in a national project that will be run by the private sector and government jointly. Incentives for private investors would be:
1: Government donated land for all five projects.
2: Access to money and loans.
3. Government will donate the land and oversee placement of five projects within the nation. Placement of said projects must immediately benefit large populations by relieving unemployment in the immediate area and socially upscale the local area.

4. Project scope: Must take over large areas of land. Provide plans for a new and advanced transportation system. Provision must be met to secure future area growth by providing development for surrounding business and industry.
5. Project completion must provide a growing community of highly technical job creation as well as an unskilled labor force to support local business.

6. Implementations should start in five locations chosen by the government seen to provide a clear opportunity for both job opportunity for the local population as well as socially upgrade the surrounding area.

7. The implementations of an oversight team (government and private) that can oversee all five projects in areas of development continuity and problem solving.

Conclusion: The creation of five projects of this size running simultaneous and strategically located within the United Stated will see to the unemployment problem. Funding should be private with the incentive being donated government land and future profits. Each project should be an amusement park the size of a Disney or bigger with the same idea as Disney of building a community of high tech jobs with local support from area population. Each project should be placed within the nation in such a way as to create a travel loop, that will get the populous to want to travel by all means of transportation with an emphasis placed on travel by car mostly creating an environment for more spending within the nation. The creation of amusement parks the size and stature of a Disney will always be seen by the populous as creation and opportunity for the local community and will act as a catalyst for future growth in the of business and industry.

Ron Tramontano

How Does The Entrepreneurial World of Seal Team 1‘s, Stack Up To The United States Navy’s, Seal Team 1

Seal Team 1, Wow! the best of the best. For many people in America and around the world this is the flash that produces the thoughts and pictures in the minds of all of us as those words are spoken, and rightly so. They are the best, at what they choose to do. A team of men and women so finely tuned that a comparison can only produce one and only one thought and that is of the finest of Swiss Time Pieces. So finely created that its workings are without question as to pre session and accuracy. Seal Teams train and execute missions much like this watch. Never missing a beat. A question arises however, Seal Team member, outside of his or her team, what do they aspires to? As an individual they are successful men and women that have acquired skills. Ask yourself this question. What is the difference between Ability and Skill? Ability is what we are born with and is given to us by God. Skill is what we have acquired through training and experience. What is experience? Trial and error...mostly error, bad chooses we hopefully learn from. There has never been nor will there ever be a Seal Team member or Team born with “ability only” that can do what Seal Team 1 has accomplished. Be dropped into Pakistan and take out Osama Bin Ladin. Individual Seal Team member training, and teamwork, are only but two of a three part quest for the making of a Seal Team 1 capable unit. The third part, is experience, and that is a killer. The Seals, of Seal Team 1 have had to do a mission or missions like this before to acquire the experience to qualify for the first team. If you were a member of any of the other teams and failed, there is a good chance you’re dead. If you’re in Entrepreneurial World you’re probably broke, out of business and would like to be dead. Okay, you have passed the test and by trail and error you have been found worthy of your new position. SEAL Team 1... STOP! I forgot to tell you one more thing you have to know.

Do you remember that Swiss Time Piece we where talking about? The one that can run one hundred years without missing a beat. Why do you think it can do that? I will tell you why. Because it knows it’s a Swiss Time Piece and it has Purpose, Integrity and Honor, made by a team of people with the same values. I see it this way. While the sum of the parts are enclosed in that solid gold watch case it will do its job and never let its team members that are also enclosed in that solid gold case down. For many of us that solid gold case may be an office or a basket ball court or a football field. For a Seal Team 1 member it’s the world stage. We can never forget the reasons we do the things we do. That’s what gets us home at the end of the day. When you walk through that door and hold the people you love in your arms, does it really matter how you got there? Or just that you’re there. At night, lie that solid gold watch on your night stands, and get into bed. Slide up to your world and hold them in your arm as you smile knowing the world your world is safer and better then it was yesterday.

No Death Sentence/Life W/O Parole on circumstantial evidence

Please
Sign Our Petition
http://tiny.cc/wf0oj

Case in point, Casey Anthony, you do not try to give a person a death sentence, or life in prison “Without Parole” only on circumstantial evidence. Justification for this kind of sentencing can only be made with hard factual evidence. Governor, Senators and Speaker, every day we read in the newspapers someone is getting out of prison because of new DNA evidence being found, or a new DNA test has been invented. Well, where is the balance for people who have been convicted on circumstantial evidence? When no physical evidence exist in a case it becomes impossible to prove your innocence. Today, it would seem one rule covers all events that fall into a specific category...such as crimes that fall under "capital felony". It needs to be changed by people who refuse to give the rule of law to another RULE... instead of giving it to a thinking person. Legislation I would like you to consider. I would ask that legislation be crafted that would not allow a person convicted on circumstantial evidence to receive a life term without parole. Please make this retroactive for all persons now being held in Florida jails. Have all persons that fall into this category go in front of a parole board for a review. If they have served an amount of time the board feels is just, and they have not been getting in any trouble while incarcerated, what would be the harm in giving them their life back? It would also save Florida some money and relieve the overcrowding in our prisons. Not sure. But she sure did have something quite smart to say recently about the martial arts and how they can help normally aggressive boys. "A lot of people who study martial arts know that if you have children who have any kind of aggression one of the best things to do is certainly not to ignore it, but to actually put that child into a martial arts class so they understand their own body, to learn discipline., to learn their own strength and then to harness it," Jolie told EW. "My boys wrestle all the time," she adds. "They're two boys, but they've been in martial arts classes for a while together and now they bow to each other, they know when to hit the mat [i.e. when they want to quit], they know when to stop wrestling. They have respect. But they're boys -- without that they're going to want to wrestle, to try things and test themselves. It's a primal thing. But to keep it in an organized way where it shows respect and discipline is fantastic." I couldn’t really tell you exactly what it was about chess that sparked my interest, and I’m not
sure I can put my finger on it today. Long story short, it wasn’t too long
before the chess student was submitting his instructor. Some can relate to
that, we’ve seen it happen time and time again. In fact, if it’s true what they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, there may be no greater compliment to any teacher or sensei than to see his students take what they’ve learned and eventually surpass their instructor. It’s hard to explain my interest in jiu-jitsu right from the very start; I guess it was a calling.

Over the years, I’ve spent so many hours training and competing, I’ve
hardly had time to get my chessboard out. I’m sure it’s in a box somewhere
with my Rubik’s Cube. Lately I’ve thought about finding that box and
maybe even getting back into chess again. Forget the Rubik’s Cube. One
thing I have done is to give some thought to what it is that first attracted me to chess and eventually to my passion in life, jiu-jitsu. The parallels are amazing to say the least.

There’s a harmony about chess just as there is in jiu-jitsu that appeals
to me and I’m sure it appeals to many others who train martial-arts. Chess is a game of the mind. It’s about thinking ahead. Jiu-jitsu is also a game of thinking and executing. Both are games that involve technique and timing. If we’ve learned anything from martial-arts it’s this: Training and technique take precedence over power. In my own case I’ve never been the strongest, but what I lacked in strength I made up for in training, hours and hours of training combined with technique. Einstein may not have been referring to jiu-jitsu, but he could have been when he said, “The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know!” Or, as Socrates said, “One thing I know, and that is that I know nothing!” That may be what keeps my feet moving forward and motivates me to train. Like chess, jiu-jitsu is very complex. Anyone who knows me has heard me say this, “There may not be anything as complex as jiu-jitsu.” So, whether you’re playing chess in an international tournament or practicing jiu-jitsu, remember that training, technique, and skill will make the difference between the world champion and the guy who taps.

Robert Drysdale

View the original article here

What is in your Kitchen?

The other night I was watching an episode of Kitchen Nightmares with the famous chef Gordan Ramsey. If you are not familiar with the show, he basically is requested to consult on various restaurants that are on the brink of closing. For some reason the owners who bring him to their establishment never seem to know what is wrong in their business that is causing their lack of business. The first thing that he does in every episode is not take a tour of the kitchen or interview the staff. He simply orders randomly on the menu and tastes what the restaurant has to offer. He is always disappointed. The reason I bring up this matter is that there are a lot of similarities in which these shows expose that is obvious and what we need to focus on in our “quality”. While Chef Ramey is visiting Italian, French, Japanese and other various themed restaurants, it is parallel to us having a Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, MMA school. It doesn’t matter. What matters is how the chef prepares the food and the quality that will keep customers coming back as well as referring others to this business.
After watching the series for some time, it is not so much that the chef (Head Instructor) is not talented, it is that he/she has lost their passion. Possibly serving the same food over and over with no inspiration. They have not innovated their dishes or had challenged their creativity to have “Specials”. They are cocky in the fact that they do not need to learn once they have opened their kitchens.
So here is the obvious advice given in this part one of a series about innovating your teaching methodology.
Sample your food – Take a step back and see how your class is run. From the appetizer (trials or warm ups), main dish (Curriculum) and dessert (upgrade programs).
Go back to school – Take a workshop or cross over and have a goal in achieving rank in another style. You may find that even a bad experience will inspire what NOT to do in your mat.
Find a mentor – Success breeds success. But remember, just because someone says they are great doesn’t mean they are. Their proof will be in you.
We always believe what we do is good. It is not until we attempt change that we will see if something else can be better. So try it. We cannot fear it since we expect our students to do the same. In the next installment we will take a look at re-evaluating our class structure. See you then!

Kru Ace Ramirez
www.krutraining.com

View the original article here

The End of the Month Reality Math-Jon Malach

The whole point of the end of month reality math is to refocus yourself and/or your team. Kru Ace Ramirez

What is for Dinner?

Some of you may have read “What is in your kitchen?” which is the part 1 of a series of articles to help examine your current curriculum offered at your school. In this installment we are going to take a look into ways to survey your curriculum offerings. Since there are so many topics such as dividing children’s classes into ages specific classes and ranks and having differing requirements according to the age breakdowns (which I do support and follow in my own school), I will not concentrate on children’s programs.
Taking on the theme of Kitchen Nightmares with Chef Ramsey, he surveys the product not by giving a questionnaire, but by sampling himself an appetizer, entrée and dessert. He usually never finishes any dish since it typically horrifies him and sees no need to continue an unpleasurable experience.

When was the last time you sampled your own “food” or shall I say “called your own school” or had a secret shopper enter your facility? Not in a meeting but randomly call and ask about your current specials and description of your programs. Does your staff have a rehearsed “elevator pitch?” Have yourself take your own trial or orientation from a staff member to see the experience you would have. This would be your “appetizer” before the main dish. Although I am not a “foodie” (although there are way too many references here), I think a great appetizer will surely deliver expectations of the main dish to come. So if you have a fantastic marketing plan and approach to sign up with a professional trial class, you are in danger of giving a mediocre entrée (Beginner Program). Or at least mediocre compared to the appetizer.

Your actual program needs to satisfy the client’s (student’s) hunger not just the first time, but every visit to your facility. Think of a familiar restaurant and you order your favorite dish from there. After years of loyal patronage you get one meal which the food just isn’t right. I hear people claim that “the place is not the same” and is going down hill and all of a sudden they wish to check out another restaurant that they got a coupon for, after all, man still has to eat. How many chances do you give when they serve you badly or not cooked to your “expectation”?

So let’s do a few bullet points.

Are your warm ups relevant to the actual class following it or is it painfully generic? (Place any two foods that do not match up)Do you sample your own food? (Are you putting yourself in the class or your staff and get honest reviews)Do you use music to motivate your student’s emotions (and update it so it is not repetitive – ambiance)Do you clearly explain about your Exotic Desserts that must be sampled (Upgrade programs)?Does your audience know what theme you are – sport orientated, self-defense, and fitness? (Are you French gourmet or Family style Italian, etc.)Does your staff know what theme you are?Do you offer “Chef Special’s” to break to same choice ordering (Offer Workshop’s with Special Guest Instructors)?Do you have alternative choices for those not fitting your main style of curriculum?

Take a look at your answers and decide for yourself the next step. One thing I can recommend is to go outside your walls and experience other forms of service that exceed your expectations for ideas. Maybe a vacation spot, High end spas, clothing boutiques, etc are nice are we are treated like kings and queen, but who will buy if the product is still underwhelming?
At the end, consistency or a quality product can create loyal base of customers and forge a reputation of a solid business. If there is a staff member that is not delivering this, it may be time to make a change as I did recently. Even though I love my guys, my business needs the love of our supporters who pay for what we say we will deliver.

If anyone would like to send me a video of their intro process, presentation of upgrade programs or a sample of their elevator pitch, email me a link to ace@krutraining.com

View the original article here

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bocaratonkarate.blogspot.com/2011/04/whats-for-dinner-kru-ace-ramirez.html' title='What’s for Dinner? Most school owners start out in this scenario, and unfortunately most get stuck and continue to operate in this scenario.

You have to ask yourself some questions: How long do I plan on doing everything myself? Did I plan on running a business or owning a business? If I got sick right now, for an entire week and could not get out of bed, what would happen? Would business continue as normal for that week, or would all hell break loose? What about 1 month?

Nobody will care about your business as much as you and (although many come very close) they will always fall short in their passion and dedication. This fact must be accepted. You have to be willing to let someone else do an OK job at cleaning the toilet several times until you can teach them how you want it to be done. You have to accept that when you put a new staff member in charge of the front desk they will bomb some sales. You have to learn to accept the fact that they are NOT as good as you.

I believe business owners make the same justifications I did for years: “I can’t afford to let someone else sign a new student up!”, “I can’t afford to let (instructor X) experiment with the warmup because students will quit.”, “I’ll just clean the mat myself, because if you want something done right you have to do it yourself!”

Welcome to being a One-Man-Show! Look forward to years of working day in and day out doing the same repetitive tasks, limiting your student body growth, and living like a control freak. Watch awesome potential staff members come and go because you didn’t provide them with an opportunity for growth. Put all your eggs in one basket, and assume you will have the desire and ability to kick and punch every single day for the rest of your life. Sound like a good plan? I didn’t think so.

We want to establish our school so that we teach the classes we enjoy, we still have time for our family, we can take a day or week off when necessary, and we perform the tasks that are most productive and enjoyable to us because we want to; not because we have to.

How do we transition from a One-Man-Show to a delegating tasks and getting the pressure off our back? Most importantly, how do we do this for low or no cost? Most school owners in this position cannot afford to hire a staff member because they are stuck in the transitional phase. There are many FREE options to accomplish this even if you cannot afford to hire someone and we will discuss this in Part 2.

By Jeremy Molley

View the original article here

Martial Arts Business: 5 Videos you might have missed

Here are a few Business Videos you might have missed…….

You can’t afford to be negative

Facebook “Likes”

Landing Pages

End of the Month Reality Math

Do you promote a FREE Event Every Month

View the original article here

Is it time to innovate your curriculum? Part 1

In today’s post I want to address a topic that I am approached with the most in emails which is dealing with “how to innovate and structure a new curriculum”. Now by this I am not suggesting a rotating curriculum, which is roughly translated as broader base of ranks being taught the same techniques in no particular order but all achieved in a certain amount of time. I am also not necessarily specifying a linear form of curriculum. Many of us started our schools years ago and as creatures of habit have replicated the exact same class structure and testing procedures (or in some cases, the lack of).

To begin this exercise, here are some self reflecting questions:

Most schools have a 1 year basic program. Why? What significance is the one year?

There is nothing wrong with a 1 year program as long as there is a purpose to that course. In college, we do not join for 4 years. We don’t even enroll for 1 year. We are paying for a semester. Let us say that that your Beginner ranks are white and yellow. Your intermediate ranks are Orange, Green and Blue. If it takes you say 6 months to get to orange and you graduate into an Intermediate class, why did you enroll them for a year and not a 6 month course since the Beginner course took 6 months to complete? Again, I am simply putting out there questions for you to fill in the answers. Some may say they enroll the, for one year with the intent to approach them in 2 months anyway and upgrade them. In that case, you could have still enrolled them in a 6 month Beginner program and upgraded them. Actually it may be easier since there is no fear of long term commitment with a business they are not yet familiar with.
Suggestion: Create true courses just like in college. A defined amount of time of requirements that must be met in a time period.) If a majority of students “fail” with this strategy, it may either be the teacher that is not directing well or there is way too much material to be covered to gain competence with.

Do you have a program where the student can train “2 or 3 times a week”?

When was the last time you heard a college offer their English classes “2 or 3 times per week”? Since when do students have the knowledge of when they should be taking classes? 2 or 3 suggests that some students are training 33% more than the next one. How about when they miss a class? What class topics are they actually missing? Are they aware by being able to look it up since you are on a strict class planner?
Suggestion: Utilize an “A” and “B” class structure of delivering material. Example, Let’s say that a school has beginner classes Monday to Thursday. For a sensible split in curriculum, the student may choose either Monday or Tuesday (A class) and Wednesday or Thursday (B class). So whether it was Monday and Wednesday or Monday and Thursday will give them the exact same training. In my KRU Muay Thai curriculum, my class planner is actually laid out as Week 1 Class 1, week 1 Class 2, etc. The instructor knows as well as the student what is happening and what they may be missing. This helps when a student truly chooses their “make up” classes in preparation of upcoming tests (Or as I call them “evaluations”. In my opinion, the word tests scare people, but through evaluations they feel they are acquiring where they are at since they first joined my school.

I hope I have not offended anyone in the way they currently run their school. There are many more questions I would like to address since I have barely scratched the surface of innovating your curriculum. At the time, we lived in the projects on Castle Hill Ave. All during the week, Monday through Friday, I would rush home from school making sure I was in the house by 4:00pm to watch Superman, Clark Kent, Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane and yes, Perry White (Great Cesar's Ghost!).

I didn't miss an episode. Even today, I collect digital comic book covers and some Superman memorabilia. Saturday mornings, it was Superman cartoons; that was the routine at our house. Sunday's however, was different. If you remember, there were no cartoons on Sundays. We would have to wake up early and get dressed for church. Mom would give us all a quarter for the church basket and send us off. I was the oldest, so I was in charge of my younger brother and four sisters. The church was across the street, St. John Vianney. I remember sitting in the pew, praying every Sunday, for God to grant me the powers of Superman. I promised him “God” I would do good and help people all over the world. This was the prayer each and every Sunday for many years. After Church, we would then go to my Grandparents to eat with the rest of the thirty or so other family members, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.
I can look back now I find it funny, because I go to work everyday, and I put on a uniform that empowers me to be the best I can be every time I wear it and in front of anyone I teach; whether it's a child or an adult, male or female; it doesn't make a difference. Astronaut or C.E.O. of a major fortune 500 company, it's a magical feeling to be empowered by putting on a uniform. Superman can fly. Never did I ever make a conscious decision to become a pilot because Superman can fly, and I wanted to be like Superman. However, I am a pilot, and I do fly. Superman can see far. As I approach my older years, my eye sight starting declining, I went and had Lasik surgery. When your sight starts to fade, due to old age, and you can't see well, getting your sight back makes you feel empowered. Superman can bend steel with his bare hands. I can punch through three half inch pieces of wood stacked on each other. So when anyone asks, what is a Black Belt? If your child asks you to do something you know they have the ability to do by them self, step back and insist they do it. Your children will acquire the experience and will truly be excited once you start to jump up and down shouting to the world how great they have done. Children observe the messages that are played out through their family's beliefs about size, shape, weight and self esteem. Parents can often be alerted to problem signs of low self esteem in their children when their child mentions a falling out with another child at school. Young children will often act aggressively when things don't go their way - they lash out, bite, kick, hit and punch. This is because children learn through observation, there is a close connection between childhood obesity and self esteem issues. However, as life teaches us, it's not what happens to us that is important “things will always happen to us” it's what we do with what happens to us that is ultimately the deciding factors as to our success or failure. Fight or flight is our body's primitive, automatic, inborn response that prepares the body to "fight" or "flee" from perceived attack, harm or threat to our survival. What are the signs that our fight or flight response has been stimulated or activated?. When our fight or flight response is activated, sequences of nerve cell firing occur and chemicals like adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol are released into our bloodstream. Blood is shunted away from our digestive tract and directed into our muscles and limbs, which require extra energy and fuel for running and fighting. In short, many of the major stresses today trigger the full activation of our fight or flight response, causing us to become aggressive, hyper vigilant and over-reactive. To protect ourselves today, we must consciously pay attention to the signals of fight or flight. For example, in times of emotional jeopardy, the fight or flight response can sharpen our mental acuity, thereby helping us deal decisively with issues, moving us to action. If you end up in a fight, you'll hit harder, jump higher and think and dodge faster than usual. We often forget how much of a problem overwhelming anxiety can be. Panic attacks, social anxiety, generalized anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder all have the potential to be quite disabling. A child who is not well adjusted, possibly having low self esteem and being overweight has little chance of being successful. It's, in my opinion, that there can be no better activity to address this type of concern other than Martial Arts. And then, on that foundation, if you choose and have it in your heart, you can take the next step and really show mercy; but you cannot exhibit mercy in and of itself. These steps must be traversed; otherwise there can be no genuine mercy. There may be patronage, condescension, or charity--even pity--but not mercy. True mercy comes only as the beautiful climax to these preceding adjuncts to group understanding, mutual appreciation, fraternal fellowship, spiritual communion, and divine harmony.

P.S. We trust many people on many different levels each day. For example: When driving a car. We trust the other drivers to stay on their side of the road. How would you feel about driving if that trust were not there? On this level, we trust the driver to unconsciously do what is right. On another level we trust professionals, we pay money to such as Doctors to keep us healthy, or Lawyers to protect our rights. On this level, we have a face or a name and a mutual agreement to place our trust in.

• Do we trust all of the people we come in contact with on a daily basis to do what will always be in our best interest? No, I don’t think so. It is a very special person that earns that level of trust from his or her peers or from us.

• Then I would ask who are these people we give our highest level of trust to?

• If you would like to know who some of these people may be. You can look to your right and then to your left I am sure some of these people are probably there right now.

• No questions asked kind of people just your best interest at heart always.

• It funny a lot of these people have the same names also. Most of them are called Mom or Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, Aunts and Uncles and just friend.

• This is why this descriptive term of being a “Trustworthy” person is such a hi honor to bestow on anyone. Now I would like you to think for a moment. If there are other people in your life that have been given this honor, and for some reason, they could not be here tonight for some reason. When was the last time you thanked them?

•

How martial arts can help kids (7 to 15) mentally and physically.

Children and Young Adults from ages 7 through 15 benefit from the physical aspects as well as the mental training found in the martial arts. I am happy to be the host of such a valuable tool for parents looking for a martial arts school for their family. This Blog will help teach young men and women to make right choices in all situations by teaching concept and values that make a boy a man and a girl a woman. Today I will touch on ten of the most valued Black Belt principles: In days to follow, I will go over each of these principles one at a time. So please visit this Blog often. Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship, Honesty, Courage, Diligence and Integrity. We have all heard tales of the Knights of The Round Table and how they lived by a code of Honor. A Black Belt also lives by this code. For him the “Black Belt” represents his or her search for themselves and what he or she is capable of. Life should never be about what you are getting it should always be about what you are becoming. When answering that question I follow a little formula, I have developed:

An optimal age for starting Martial Arts could be as early as three years of age if and only if you have an instructor with a personality that is able to be both funny and outrageous. Most schools, however start children at five years of age.

1) How far must I travel?
2) Is it in a safe area of town?
3) Is the facility kept clean?
4) How long has the owner been in business? and
5) How many Black Belts does the school train each week?

The style of martial art may or may not be so important. What is always important, however, is how the family relates to the instructors.

There are two main types of martial arts styles: sport oriented and traditional. I do not feel one to be better than the other; however, I do believe age does play an important part as to which one is chosen. I believe children benefit the most from a traditional style of the art; it provides all the social and martial arts training a young man or young woman will need. The sport-oriented styles focus more on fighting skills. Traditional styles include Tang Soo Do (the style in which I have trained for the last 30 years), which focuses on things like discipline, respect, focus, control and will provide students with exceptional fighting skills. Most Japanese, Okinawan, and Chinese styles are traditional. Korean styles, such as the popular Tae Kwon Do, can be either traditional or sport, depending upon the instructor.

Please feel free to call me anytime if you need more information, or if you wish to discuss specific styles.
